The Independent Commission of Investigations has launched a probe into the fatal police shooting of an unidentified man in St Catherine yesterday.

Reports are that about 4:45 p.m. on November 17, the police were on patrol along the Gregory Park Main Road when they signaled the driver of a Toyota Axio with several occupants to stop.

The driver reportedly ignored the order and sped off. The police chased the vehicle, which later crashed into a wall.

According to investigators, the occupants jumped from the car and reportedly started firing at the police team, who returned the fire. When the shooting ended, one man was found inside the passenger seat clutching a firearm. He appeared to have gunshot wounds.

A nine millimetre pistol was seized reportedly. It was fitted with a magazine containing one nine millimetre round.

The injured man was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

INDECOM and the police are continuing their investigations.
