Celebs partner with KSAMC to promote safety
In a quirky blend of culinary creativity and disaster preparedness, social media influencers coupled up recently for an unconventional cook-off, tasked with crafting emergency meals from a selection of canned goods and other items.
The event, an all-hazards expo and emergency cook-off, was organised by the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation. It was held at the St William Grant Park in downtown Kingston on Friday, and was aimed not only to entertaining patrons, but also to educating persons about the importance of disaster preparedness. The cook-off served to enlighten participants of safe and creative ways to prepare meals for themselves and their families in the event of a disaster.
Among the influencers were Shanice 'Shanzi' Adair and Jermaule 'Nino' Adair, a married couple known for their vibrant online presence, and Keticia 'T.C' Chatman along with her long-time partner, Tollani Reynolds.
"We used the cook-off to attract a diverse crowd and disseminate crucial information," Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby explained. "Social media influencers added a modern twist, helping us reach a broader audience effectively."
Desmond McKenzie, minister of local government and community development, hailed the initiative as a timely effort, noting that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has started and that Kingston is vulnerability to disasters.
"This event is not just about cooking, it's about education and prevention," McKenzie said.
Similarly, Swaby said: "This isn't just about a cook-off, it's about building a safer, more informed community. We all have a role to play in protecting our homes and loved ones." The mayor underscored the importance of vigilance, especially in fire-prone areas.
"We must examine the causes of domestic fires and work closely with the fire brigade to prevent tragedies," urged Swaby. "Simple precautions, like not leaving stoves unattended, can make a significant difference."
Reflecting on innovations showcased during the event, including safer cooking equipment, McKenzie expressed optimism about their potential impact.
"I saw Fesco introducing a non-metal cylinder that eliminates explosion risks," he noted. "I want to urge the mayor, and I'm going to urge all the mayors across the country, to partner with that company to encourage persons within our respective constituencies and divisions to choose safety first."
