Jonah: ‘I am gonna come out and say I do it, and it is not just a song.’

One year ago, dancehall artiste Jonah appeared to be on a mission to elevate his voice for the kingdom of God. The former Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall winner demonstrated such deep conviction, that he was seen clad in all-white, carrying a cross through Half-Way Tree, St Andrew.

At the time, Jonah resisted claims that his actions were merely a publicity stunt to revive his stalling music career, insisting instead that he was simply following God's instructions.

"Mi go on mi spiritual journey and mi do all a whe mi say mi a go do fi di Almighty," Jonah said of his cross-carrying days.

He maintained that, like biblical figures, he was guided by divine instruction and would not shy away from his calling. "God told mi to minister to the youths and help them, and mi do that. Mi walk with the cross go Half-Way Tree and deliver the message that God give mi. Mi make a promise to the Almighty and mi fulfil it, and now mi take on back mi dancehall career," he explained.

But Jonah's return to dancehall has sparked as much controversy as his spiritual journey. His latest single, Jetz 2 Holiday, ventures into one of the most taboo topics in the genre, openly celebrating giving oral pleasure to his lady love. Jonah revealed that the track, which will appear on his upcoming Reverse Psychology EP, was inspired by a former girlfriend. He admitted he had long wanted to write such a song but was initially held back by fear of criticism.

"Mi girlfriend at the time ask if mi mad, because everybody a guh hate mi and bun mi out, because we know how Jamaican stay," Jonah recalled. "Mi pause it at that time, and den mi go through the phases in life; but mi always say mi a guh go back to it, and now is the time," he added.

In Jamaica, particularly within dancehall culture, oral sex is widely regarded as taboo and often frowned upon, with many artistes and cultural commentators discouraging the practice as morally inappropriate. But for Jonah, the stigma has been unfair to women, framing them as passive while men are celebrated for sexual exploits.

"Yuh notice in dancehall how the man dem a freak out the woman dem, but nobody want to please back the woman?" he questioned. "Mi a guh be the man to please back the females dem, and open the gate, and make everybody feel free," he added.

Jonah further explained that a vast majority of women have testified to receiving oral pleasure, challenging the honesty of men who claim otherwise.

"I am gonna come out and say I do it, and it is not just a song," he declared, making it clear that his track is a reflection of real life, not just fantasy.
