Garvey Maceo seek redemption
Garvey Maceo High, the defending champions of the ISSA daCosta Cup, were left bruised and humbled after a crushing 4-0 defeat at home to Glenmuir High on Tuesday. But today, the 'Lionel Town Lions' are roaring for redemption as they welcome Denbigh High in a crucial Zone I playoff clash.
Coming off their first loss of the season, the Lester Hibbert-coached team finished second in the zone on 18 points, three behind leaders Glenmuir. Four teams are involved in the playoffs, with the top three advancing to the round of 32.
The champions will be eager to return to winning ways. They edged Denbigh 2-1 away just two weeks ago and will be confident of repeating that result.
"Today's game against Denbigh is very crucial as this is our only home game and we need three points. Denbigh are tough -- they are coming off a big win in their last match. Our senior players will have to step up, but Garvey Maceo is a champion team. We have a never-say-die mentality and one loss does not define our season. A win today will put us one step closer to advancing," said Hibbert.
Denbigh started the season slowly, managing only one point from their first three matches. Since then, they have found form with four straight wins, including a 10-0 demolition of Bustamante High two days ago, to finish third on 13 points.
Last year's leading scorer, Lashawn Barnaby, is back in form with seven goals in his last two matches. With Odaine Thompson -- who scored a hat-trick on Tuesday, winger Devor Wynter, Keanardo Smith, and Rahjaun Cassanova all firing, plus goalkeeper Javar Johnson in fine form, Denbigh will be no pushover today.
Meanwhile, Glenmuir look set to continue their dominance after their emphatic 4-0 win over Garvey Maceo. They will host fourth-place Kemps Hill, a team they defeated 3-0 at home just five days ago.
