National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang says the vision behind the construction of the new Stony Hill Police Station extends beyond just law enforcement.

Speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the station on Wednesday, Chang noted that the station is the ninth such facility to be reconstructed under his watch. He said the Government has provided the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) with resources to make Jamaica a safer place.

"There is no doubt or question about the impact we have on the character [of the] police force today. It's the same men and women, but with better resources, leadership and training. We see a constabulary force that we can all be proud of."

Chang stated that 17 of the 19 police divisions have recorded significant reductions in murders this year, compared to the corresponding period last year. He said Jamaica has achieved a 42 per cent reduction in the homicide rate, thanks to the role of the security forces.

The minister, who is also deputy leader of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), said the Dr Andrew Holness-led administration has spent more than $90 billion on various security initiatives. These include the reconstruction and upgrade of stations, the purchase of vehicles, and the expansion in the size of the forces. He said the security forces have, in turn, provided the country with a good return on the investment.

"We are at a good point, the job is not complete, there is more to be done," he said.

And with the general election looming, Chang also used the occasion to make a political point.

"We opened a balance sheet [and] it's a good time to look at it," he said in reference to a list of achievements published by the JLP.

"It is not just because it's election time, which is part of our process, but want to remind those who are listening, beyond this audience ... this kind of investment [has] never before [been] seen in the police force," Chang said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Richard Stewart emphasised that the Stony Hill facility will enable policemen and women to respond more effectively to crime, conduct thorough investigations, and provide a higher standard of service to the public.

"To the citizens of Stony Hill, I encourage you to embrace this facility as your own. This is your police station and your partnership is crucial to its success. We urge you to work hand in hand with our officers to enhance your safety and that of your families," Stewart said.
